Summer Reading Idea

Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian and the Secrets of Metamorphosis by Kim Todd
Check out this book for some interesting summer reading. It is a fascinating story of a woman born in Europe in 1647. At age 13 she painted her first images of insects and plants. Maria studied the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies. She published a book where for the first time the stages of development of different species of butterflies and the plants they fed on were presented. At a young age, she packed up her life and moved across the ocean to Surinam to continue her studies. Be sure to check out her incredible images by doing a Google search of images for her name, Maria Sibylla Merian.
Welcome
We hope you enjoy our site, whether you are a visitor or a member. We are a chapter of the North American Butterfly Association, dedicated to conserving butterflies and their habits, and we cover the Sarasota county area. Chapter membership is free when you join NABA and live within our area. Our season runs from September through May with some activities in the summer. We have field trips, programs, plant exchanges, and garden tours. We maintain a butterfly garden that is open to the public, free of charge, and handicapped accessible. We also do community outreach and educational programs. We have a newsletter that keeps you informed about upcoming activities. We look forward to hearing from you here and at our events.
