Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian and the Secrets of Metamorphosis by Kim Todd
Check out this book for some interesting summer reading. It is a fascinating story of a woman born in Europe in 1647. At age 13 she painted her first images of insects and plants. Maria studied the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies. She published a book where for the first time the stages of development of different species of butterflies and the plants they fed on were presented. At a young age, she packed up her life and moved across the ocean to Surinam to continue her studies. Be sure to check out her incredible images by doing a Google search of images for her name, Maria Sibylla Merian.
